That is how they came STU with that wax oil on it from factory cos when i was at VW's we used to clean it all off when the cars were sold an went for PDI(pre delivery inspection) and valetd, we didnt know any different being a new dealership so all us  staff still learning then VW told us it was part of the protection warrenty on the car an if removed would devalue the customers warrenty
alot recalling customers to waxoil there cars went on for a while for us
just thought i worked at that dealer ship when your style golf was new

I work at VW parts department  2years, ya see the garage where i worked was a multi dealer ship cos they had three sites in the area we did MAZDA in one VW/AUDI in one and FIAT & LADA in this was back in the 80s when all the guvners thought they were Yuppys spending money like no tomorow so the dealerships  didnt last long, the garage its self had been around for years but when the old owner retired and his two sons took over they just  it all up spending what they didnt really ave so all we got made redundant

What i would real love is a mk2 limited most powerfull factory built golf untill the mk4 r32 but they are worth a bom only 72 ever made u mite of herd of them since you worked at vw

D'ya know STU I have never seen one of them 4x4 Golfs not even a pic not even when I was at VW so they must ave been   rare the other golf ya mentioned I might of seen one and didn't realise what it was   cos we always had someone turn up at the garage from VW's in something unusual
N.B.
I have just relised what golf you was on about a G60 very rare, yep that was one of the unusual cars they would turn up in from VW, They also did a G60 Corrado aswell

here's something for you to  read
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mk2
